Abegweit First Nation Enhances PEI's Trout Population

Scotchfort PE, --- October 7 , 2014

The first of 35,000 speckled trout will be released by Abegweit First Nation on Tuesday, October 7th at Mooney's Pond. The initial 8000 speckled trout, raised at Abegweit's Enhancement and Biodiversity Hatchery, will be released into the Morell River at 5 different sites. The fish are progeny of speckled trout captured from the Morell River one year ago.

The release is part of a program that Abegweit First Nation began two years ago to aid in stream enhancement projects across PEI and were raised in partnership with the Province of PEI Department of Agriculture and Forestry, PEI Wildlife Federation, Morell River Management Co-op, the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of PEI and Cavendish Farms.

“The young fish are up to 5 grams of weight now, and have an excellent chance of survival” notes hatchery manager Scott Taylor. “They are healthy and will make a positive impact on trout fishing in the future.”

"Helping to repopulate the Island's trout population is in tune with the Mi’kmaq views on conservation, protection and stewardship of the environment," said Chief Brian Francis. "We are proud to put our values into action with such a valuable project."

Abegweit First Nation will be stocking over 35,000 trout across the Island over the next few weeks. The release on the Morell starts at Mooney’s Pond at 10:00 a.m.
