About the Mi'kmaq Confederacy
An old Mi'kmaq story describes how Glooscap, a Mi'kmaq creation figure, carefully and thoughtfully placed the territory of Epekwitk on the gentle laughing waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Glooscap then slept on a sandy beach, waking years later with a strong conviction to protect the integrity of this serene island. He then devoted his time on earth to this task.
The story of Glooscap's creation is symbolic of the modern day efforts, realized in the creation of the Mi'kmaq Confederacy of Prince Edward Island, to continue protecting the territorial integrity of Epekwitk. The Mi'kmaq occupation of Epekwitk, known today as the province of Prince Edward Island, dates back thousands of years.
Since the inception of the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of Prince Edward Island in April 2, 2002, the Mi'kmaq Confederacy has worked to build the necessary infrastructure to promote, protect and enhance all PEI Mi’kmaq.
The Mi'kmaq Confederacy is a not-for-profit Tribal Council and Provincial Territorial Organization (PTO) governed by a Board of Directors consisting of the Band Councils from Lennox Island and Abegweit First Nations.
As a PTO, the Mi'kmaq Confederacy serves as a provincial forum for the member First Nations on political and policy issues. As a Tribal Council, the organization provides advisory services to member First Nation Councils in five key areas: band governance, community planning, financial, economic development and technical services.
The Mi'kmaq Confederacy promotes knowledge and understanding of Mi’kmaq rights by conducting research, developing and implementing initiatives and building relationships necessary to resolve issues in a cooperative manner. The Mi'kmaq Confederacy upholds and sustains the principles of unity, cooperation, partnership, trust, respect and integrity.
The Mi'kmaq Confederacy is also the common forum and unified voice for the advancement of Treaty and Aboriginal rights for the Lennox Island and Abegweit First Nations.
The Mi'kmaq Confederacy is a multi-functioning organization. Our Head Office is located in Lennox Island. Our employees deliver programs and services throughout Prince Edward Island and are located in offices in Summerside, Charlottetown, Scotchfort and Rocky Point.
