Supporting Health and Well Being of First Nations on PEI
In March 2005, the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of PEI proposed to establish a Health Directorate to serve the aggregate needs of the PEI First Nations. The MCPEI Board strongly felt that a Health program was needed to address both policy and programming needs.
In addition to the growing policy related demand, the Health Directorate serves as an advisor on a broad range of programming including; Suicide Prevention, Health Emergency Management; Health Promotion in areas such as Nutrition, Diabetes, Physical Education and other primary health care services.
Overall the Health Program role is to:
- Administer a health service program which enhances the health and well-being of First Nations on PEI
- Provide a technical support for health policy and program development
- Monitor the health program of MCPEI
- Act as a liaison between MCPEI member bands, (including health workers, Chief and Councils, etc.) and other agencies or government departments
- Promote and develop ideas on positive attitudes for good health · Support health career development
