Danielle Moore
Danielle Moore is twenty two years old and a member of the Lennox Island First Nation. She currently lives just outside of Charlottetown in Marshfield while she attends school at the University of Prince Edward Island.
In 2003, Danielle was crowned Miss Lennox Island when she was 16 years old. She graduated from Westisle Composite High School in 2005 and was then accepted to the University of Prince Edward Island. Some of the challenges and struggles she had with education were the racial discriminations and stereotypes of being Aboriginal student. Danielle didn’t let this get her down and she used these negative attitudes to fuel her energy to accomplish her educational goals. In 2011, Danielle will be graduating in with a Bachelor of Science with a major in Psychology and a minor in Chemistry.
Danielle is presently finishing her Psychology major and she has already finished her minor in Chemistry. Danielle also works at UPEI as an Aboriginal Student Advocate and Mentor at the Mawi’omi Aboriginal Student Resource Centre. As part of her job, Danielle travels to schools all over Prince Edward Island to encourage more Aboriginal students to enter some sort of post secondary education institution. Danielle takes pride in her job as it is work that she was doing informally all along. She wants to encourage more high school students to finish high school and attend post secondary institutions such as UPEI. She also enjoys being a resource person to any aboriginal student who has questions about gaining a post secondary education. She feels she has personal experience that can assist other aboriginal students in their journey of education.
In her spare time, Danielle enjoys visiting family and friends, reading as many books possible and spending time with her Fiancé, Earl Rayner, her cat Garfy, and her dog Guiness and studying for the courses she is taking. In the future, Danielle’s goal is to complete her Bachelor of Science and apply to the Bachelor of Education program at UPEI.
Danielle wants to encourage aboriginal youth to take their studies seriously and work hard to get a solid education. She says “If I can do it anyone can do it, the key is being committed to the program and courses you take. Make the most of the education that is out there to fulfill your dreams and goals, but having an awesome support team backing you is always great.”
